Think Malawi is happy to report on the continued success of the Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management project at Katubza Full Primary School, located within the Dzaleka Refugee Camp. Think Malawi funded the project, and it is being carried out by our partners on this project, Women Palm Tree Organisation (WPTO).

As noted in our previous news article, the school had nearly 3,000 students between the age of 7-17, with approximately half of them being girls. WPTO visited the school in October 2024 and found that 600 of the girls aged 10-17 were at risk to being absent from school due to inadequate menstrual health facilities.

Thanks to £4,000 of Think Malawi funding WPTO has already set up a mothers group to use 5 sewing machines and began the production and distribution of Menstrual Hygiene Management packages.

We have previously reported on the delivery and setting up of the tailoring machines in our monthly newsletter. In our newsletter we provide short updates on our charity and let you know about news articles you might have missed.

These packages provide the girls with the resources they need to stay in class including reusable sanitary pads.

In a Facebook post WPTO said:

"Thanks to the incredible efforts of Mother Groups, Reusable sanitary pads are being Made with support from THINK MALAWI and distributed to keep girls in class every day of the month.

Pads are not only sustainable but also empowering, helping girls stay confident, focused, and absent -free in class and remove a barrier's to Girls Education."

Looking ahead in this project we will continue to update you on the continued success of this project as WPTO are also establishing an ambassador team of 10 girls who have been identified as leaders during their lessons and will support and educate their peers in learning and understanding these issues.

With this newsletter we are thus proud to report the progress on one of the key five goals set out within the first 12 months of the project

The 10 women equipped with tailoring skills will be able to produce sanitary pads and school unform and clothes for vulnerable girls and boys and generate income for their families and vulnerable learners.

The other 4 aims of WPTO and our project are still being assessed due to their longer-term aims:

  1. Increased the rate of class attendance of 746 girl learners by 80% thereby improving the school academic performance.

  2. Increase the capacity of 10 mothers group members to effectively manage and sustain menstrual health, hygiene and sanitation practices.

  3. Reduced cases of girls drop outs and consequently child marriages at Katubza Full Primary School by 70%.

  4. Reduced cases of pregnancies among 400 girl learners resulting from lack of sexual reproductive health information at school.

Think Malawi will continue updating our readers on this project and other similar projects throughout this year on this website, however, there are other ways to also stay updated through our social media such as Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and X or join our monthly newsletter.
