Tour de France pro cyclist Fred Wright lends his support to our London to Glasgow cycle ride!

We’re very grateful to everyone who has responded with advice, support and pedal power so far, for our forthcoming Pedal with a Purpose cycle ride.

Our highest profile supporter so far knows a thing or two about long distance cycling, having twice completed the Tour de France. Fred Wright of Team Bahrain Victorious sent us this message of support:

“I wish the riders the best for their epic adventure across Britain. It’s a great chance for the cycling community to support Think Malawi’s vital education projects while taking on a big cycling challenge. Finishing the ride in Glasgow while the World Championships are going on will be a real buzz. Fingers crossed I’ll be racing there myself!”

Cyclists can join our epic charity cycle ride from London to Glasgow, taking place 5 to 10 August 2023 and finishing at the UCI Cycling World Championships, to raise vital funds for our grassroots Malawian education projects. The unsupported charity bike ride will start in London and culminate on August 10 at the UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow.

The ride will travel through some of the UK’s most scenic cycling routes, including the stunning Lincolnshire Fens, the dramatic sweeping moorland of the Northern Pennines, and ride across the iconic Humber Bridge, one of the world’s longest single-span suspension bridges. The cyclists will be covering almost 500 miles, on their epic six day adventure.

The funds raised from the Pedal with a Purpose campaign will directly benefit Think Malawi's grassroots education projects supporting children and youth in their local communities. These initiatives range from making reusable sanitary pads available, enabling girls to stay in school, building desks to innovative remote learning projects.

Steve McInerny, founder and trustee of Think Malawi, who cycled across Africa in 2004

which led to the formation of the charity, comments:

“I can’t wait for this ride, as it’s a chance to explore some of the lesser-visited parts of the British countryside in an independent way. Through this ride, we hope to inspire people to try bikepacking and longer distance cycling. Our goal is to raise £25,000, which will make a significant impact on the educational lives of Malawian children. And we’d love to know if any Malawians will be competing at the World Championships so we can cheer them on!”

Alastair Boon and Alex Bascetta, both Peckham Cycle Club members, and Paul Facer, who

has competed in multi-day mountain bike races at an international level, are co-organisers of

Pedal with a Purpose. The team are keen to highlight that with the right preparation, less

experienced cyclists can rise to the challenge.

Think Malawi is a volunteer-led charity, based in the UK, which funds grassroots education

projects in Malawi. The charity focuses on raising funds for sustainable community projects designed to uplift and empower the young Malawian people, creating lasting impact. Previous projects have included; classroom construction, a feeding programme, water sanitation projects, and the provision of reusable sanitary pads and changing rooms in schools. Since young people (under 25 years) constitute 60 percent of the population on the African continent, investing in Malawian youth development and empowerment is crucial to the future of the country.
