Across Malawi, thousands of girls still miss school because they cannot afford safe menstrual products. Period poverty in Africa continues to affect education, confidence, health, and opportunity for young women living in rural communities.

That is why Think Malawi is working to change lives through practical and sustainable menstrual health projects in Malawi. Their projects provide reusable period pads, menstrual hygiene education, changing rooms, and sewing training for local women and school mother groups.

Why Reusable Period Pads Matter

Disposable products are often too expensive for families living in poverty. Many girls are forced to use unsafe alternatives like old cloth, leaves, or paper, which can lead to infections and embarrassment.

Reusable menstrual pads offer a safer and more sustainable solution. These sanitary pads reusable products can last up to two years when washed correctly, helping girls stay in school with dignity and confidence.

Communities across Malawi are increasingly benefiting from:

These washable solutions not only reduce monthly costs for families but also reduce environmental waste.

Think Malawi’s 2026 Projects

Through its “Her Education Matters” programme, Think Malawi is supporting schools and communities with long-term menstrual health solutions. In 2026, projects include training women to produce reusable sanitary towels locally, building changing rooms in schools, and improving menstrual hygiene education for students.

One recent project at Njenga Primary and Secondary Schools trained 20 women to make reusable cloth menstrual pads using sewing machines and locally sourced materials. The project also supports girls with improved sanitation facilities and menstrual awareness programmes.

These programmes are designed to create lasting impact, empowering local communities while helping girls continue their education.

How Small Donations Make a Big Difference

Many people think donations need to be large to matter. In reality, small donations can directly improve lives.

A £5 donation can help provide washable sanitary pads or contribute toward hygiene education materials for girls in rural schools.

£14 can help fund a reusable menstrual pads kit that may include cloth pads, soap, underwear, and menstrual health guidance.

A £30 donation can support sewing training, reusable feminine pads production, or community-led menstrual hygiene workshops that continue helping girls long after the project ends.
